Dämmans Lighthouse – a piece of Swedish history
Dämmans lighthouse is built on a natural foundation in the middle of Kalmarsund and was at the time of construction the first large bottom-fixed lighthouse in Sweden.
The background to the lighthouse's history can be found in the expanded trade and shipping operations of the 1800s. The shipowners demanded safe travel and a way to avoid pilots, as well as being able to sail even at night.
As part of a modernization, it was decided in the 1860s to mark the foundation Dämman due to the many accidents that occurred when ships passed and a drawing for the lighthouse was produced in 1864.
However, the construction turned out to be more complex and time-consuming than originally predicted, and to meet the urgent need for a lighthouse, a temporary lighthouse was erected while work on the main lighthouse continued.
On September 20, 1873, the lighthouse was lit for the first time, although construction was not completed until the following year. The total cost was estimated at SEK 250,000
and was at the time Sweden's most expensive lighthouse.
In the 1990s, the government sold Dämmans Lighthouse to an entrepreneur who later converted the lighthouse into a hotel and restaurant.
In 2014, Dämmans Lighthouse was acquired by its current owner. Brick by brick, Dämmans Lighthouse has been built to ride out storms and with great devotion, Dämmans Lighthouse has evolved into a fantastic meeting place, where legacy and future meets in perfect harmony.
